ABSTRACT

Heterogeneity in Healthy Kidneys: Molecular Mechanisms, Physiological Adaptations, and Clinical Implications

Finlay Ostrach

ABSTRACT

The nephron serves as the principal functional unit of the kidney, with each nephron contributing uniquely to the maintenance of systemic homeostasis through specialized transport, filtration, and regulatory processes. Although healthy kidneys are often regarded as structurally uniform, accumulating evidence demonstrates that nephrons exhibit considerable functional heterogeneity arising from differences in anatomical location, cellular composition, transporter expression, metabolic activity, and hemodynamic regulation. This physiological diversity enables the kidney to adapt efficiently to fluctuations in fluid balance, electrolyte concentrations, acid–base status, blood pressure
