ABSTRACT

Reliable assessment of kidney function is fundamental for the diagnosis, staging, and management of renal disorders. Although serum creatinine-derived estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) remains the standard approach in clinical practice, its diagnostic performance may be influenced by physiological and demographic variables, including muscle mass, age, sex, dietary intake, and ethnicity. These limitations have prompted growing interest in cystatin C as an alternative endogenous biomarker for estimating kidney function.
