ABSTRACT

Supporting Relatives Through Loss in Emergency Care Environments

Ohly Goodsmith

ABSTRACT

The death of a loved one in an emergency care environment is often sudden, unexpected, and emotionally overwhelming for family members. Emergency departments are primarily designed to provide rapid medical assessment and life saving interventions; however, they also serve as critical settings where relatives may first experience grief and bereavement. The way healthcare professionals communicate, provide emotional support, and facilitate family involvement can significantly influence the grieving process. This short communication examines the importance of bereavement support in emergency care settings and highlights key strategies that can improve the experiences of relatives during and after a patient's death. Effective communication, compassionate care, family-centered practices, and multidisciplinary collaboration are identified as essential components of high quality bereavement support. Despite increasing recognition of these needs, many emergency departments continue to face challenges related to time constraints, limited training, resource shortages, and environmental barriers.
