Vinay S. Panchalwar*, Sachin J. Dhagadi and Vrishali Ankalwar
ABSTRACT
Aim: Aim of the present study was to compare the anthropometric indices in a defined population, to determine the best index in predicting cardiovascular risk factor. Methods: A cross sectional observational study was conducted on 150 patients (age > 18 yrs) with systemic hypertension (50 patients), diabetes mellitus (50 patients) and dyslipidemia (50 patients). In each group of disease, 25 patients of either sex were selected. Anthropometric indices were calculated in the patients and their correlation with aforementioned cardiovascular risk factors was studied. Results: WHtR was highly significantly correlated with HTN and type 2 DM. BMI and WC were significantly correlated while WHR was non-significantly correlated with HTN. WC and WHR were significantly correlated while BMI was non-significantly correlated with type 2 DM. In dyslipidemia, all anthropometric indices (WHtR, WHR, WC and BMI) were highly significantly correlated. Conclusion: Waist to height ratio was superior to other anthropometric indices (BMI, WC and WHR) in predicting cardiovascular disease risk factors (HTN, type 2 DM and dyslipidemia).
